Pyranha Fusion Sit On Top Review

Sit on tops have been around for a while but the Fusion Sit On Top from Pyranha really takes the concept to the next level. It won gear of the show at the 2014 Paddle Expo event in Germany. The trade show for the paddlesports industry in Europe.

What is newer than Sit On Tops are Crossover Kayaks and Micro Adventures. These are both categories the Fusion SOT can sit firmly and happliy in.

The idea of getting away from it all for several weeks kayaking around Greenland or some other far flung place is out of reach for alot of people. What most of us can spare is an afternoon, day or an afternoon into the next morning away and out on the water before chores and other commitments come back to find you.

The crossover boats are ideal for this type of micro adventure. They are easy to paddle and paddle well if your are a seasoned kayaker. They have enough room so you can load up enough gear to get away from 5pm till 9am. However there are people, beginners and competent paddlers  alike who don't want to be in a closed cockpit kayak for this type of adventure. This is where the Fusion Sit On Top comes in.

You get all the plus points of a crossover kayak but the security in the knowledge that it is stable and your legs are not inside a closed cockpit.

So what are the drawbacks? It won't be as responsive as a closed cockpit kayak? Wrong, the Fusion SOT has been designed from the Fusion which in turn has a hull design that was developed from the Mountain 300, a River Kayak that Pyranha had in the mid 1990's. With the optional thigh straps fitted the Fusion SOT can be paddled down grade 3 whitewater with ease. The rocker and volume in the bow of the boat keeps you dry and allows you to turn the boat easily. What if I want to paddle on flat water? Well the rocker flatten out to the rear a little and there is a drop down skeg at the rear to aid tracking against wind and or currents.

We have had the boat down several rivers and on several lochs and every time have not thought that the Fusion SOT could not handle the conditions and water we were in.

So if you want a kayak that you can put on 99% of the water out there from Sea, to Loch to River and have a bit of adventure when your doing it then buy a Fusion SOT and get out there, load it up and have a micro adventure.
